Remember Alex who graduated last year at 13? The letter below is from his mother, Melinda.
Hey,
Can’t believe Alex is now an official Sophomore. He made the President’s List this semester. He got high A’s in all of his classes, Cal II, Physics I (Cal based) Chemistry I and all his labs. Please let Mr. Mitchell and Ms. Ejafi know. His professors have seen a big change in him. In his classes, this semester, the students started to respect and look up to him more and ask him for help, not just because he was getting the highest test scores, but they realized he was smart and how hard he worked, even though he still flaps, jumps and doesn’t always act or talk like everyone else. This is what the professors have told me. He is actually trying to remember student’s names and trying to talk with them. Although usually he and I have to talk about how to approach them or how to say something about a test or assignment so he doesn’t make them feel stupid. He is still not the best about that. He doesn’t mean to, but it does. He is going to take a public speaking course this summer for an elective. He still plans on starting to attend Georgia Tech. next summer. We are going to do a summer session there so both of us can adjust to the new campus, traffic, and me finding things to do or just a good place to wait.

S in B.E.S.T
Friday, January 27th, 2012 - by Jennifer Grant
In today’s K-8 assembly, students shared ways to set and achieve goals. We also watched a video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-UjX6OKWF2c ) about Samantha Garvey. Samantha shared her thoughts on achieving goals and overcoming obstacles relating to a science competition. During the remainder of this quarter, we will be discussing the “S” (set goals and do something everyday to achieve them) in B.E.S.T.

Eaton Academy goes to The Big Apple
Wednesday, January 25th, 2012 - by Dawn Fix
Today students from Eaton Academy left for New York, led by Ms. Eaton-Partalis and Mr. Uitvlugt. The group will see a Broadway show, visit at least one museum, and see Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. Additional sightseeing will take place on a bus. The trip will be updated on the blog with photos and quotes from the group.
From Ms. Eaton-Partalis: “Great flight! Clear as a bell. Flew over Ellis Island, Statue of Liberty, and Citifield into LGA. As one student put it, ‘Wow, what a pretty awesome view!’ Off to Central Park, dinner, Broadway, and Times Square.”

Studying the Greek Culture and the Beginning of Western Civilization
Friday, December 16th, 2011 - by Dawn Fix
The High School Resource program just finished studying the formation of Greek city-states (in 1500 BC) and all the accomplishments and contributions from the Greeks that we still use today.
We can see the beautiful Greek architecture in many of our public buildings, especially in our country’s capital city at Washington D.C. Specifically, the Supreme Court building and the parts of the State Capital building were designed with Greek influence in mind. Speaking of government, we get our system of Democracy directly from the Greeks!!
We were amazed at the conquests of the brilliant warrior Alexander the Great, and knowing he made his mark in a very short time frame (he died at the young age of 33 years old) simply astonished most of our students.
We will begin to study the Roman Empire when we return from holiday break, and we will have more then.
The Scarlet Letter
Friday, December 16th, 2011 - by Dawn Fix
For one of their projects in literature, the High School Resource program has finished reading Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter. The students enjoyed learning about the Puritan religion and all the rules the people of Salem, Massachusetts had to abide by. They were especially amazed at the fact that no one was allowed to listen to or enjoy music!!!
As part of Eaton Academy’s learning across the curriculum, the students in the Independent Living class, also wrote and illustrated a Salem town newspaper, reporting on the events that took place during the time described in the book. Most importantly their research covered the infamous Salem Witch Trials of 1732-33. They discovered, through video, computer, and print research, the accusations that were made against seemingly innocent victims, and the ultimate punishment in most cases, of death by hanging.
Please take a minute to read one or two of the entries of a few of our student’s newspapers.
