Community Service Project
Monday, February 27th, 2012 - by Dawn Fix
As part of our community service project, the students in the high school resource program at Eaton Academy worked extremely hard at collecting canned and boxed foods for the North Fulton Community Center food pantry. Over the last two weeks our students collected, counted, sorted, and boxed over 400 food items!!!!! On Friday, April 24th we went as a group over to the center and brought in all the collected food and helped to put some of it on the shelves. We all came away with a wonderful feeling of pride and accomplishment in knowing that we contributed in helping the less fortunate people of North Fulton County. We would like to thank all the students, administrators, faculty, and families at Eaton Academy who, once again, showed their kindness and generosity for this very worthy cause. We are so proud of all of you!!!!!

On the way to becoming
MY B.E.S.T.
While we integrate the principals of B.E.S.T. on a daily basis, we dedicate a day to focus on each of the components. Below are the 3 components we have worked on this year.
23 September 2011 “B” Day Plans
Befriend only those who bring out the BEST in you.
Students read the article below
How Many Facebook Friends Do We Have, For Real?
They were then instructed to ask themselves these questions.
Do your friends inspire you or make you feel good about yourself?
Do the activities you engage in with your friends lead you to make good or bad choices?
Have those choices affected your life positively or negatively?
Are your friends “there for you” when you most need them?
As a group, come up with an example of a situation for each of the questions.
Discuss ways to handle yourself if a ‘friend’ tries to lead you to make a bad choice.
List and explain at least 3 ways to bring out the best in your friends.
List and explain at least 3 ways to make sure you are “befriending” the people who are best for you.
2 December 2011 “E” Day Plans
Excel in your talents
Eaton students took an online survey to find out what career is right for them. We then watched Triumph of The Nerds…
Robert X. Cringely’s in-depth look — via this 1996 PBS series — examining the rise of Silicon Valley giants from nerd-dom to success is exacting in detail, providing an impressive history of personal computing. All three installments (“Impressing Their Friends,” “Riding the Bear” and “Great Artists Steal”) invite viewers into the lives of modern movers and shakers such as Microsoft’s Bill Gates and Apple’s Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak.
Afterwards we discussed the video and students’ individual quiz results to emphasized talent vs. skills. Students were able to recognize and share their individual talents with the group.
10 February 2012 “S” Day Plans
‘Set goals and do something every day to achieve them.’
For setting goals we went over long-term goals vs. short-term goals as well as the word ‘failure’. We brought in guest speaker Mr. Joey Shonka who speak about his experiences on the Appalachian Trail and the Central Divide. Students were amazed by his accomplishments.
Assembly covers W.O.W and B.E.S.T
Friday, February 24th, 2012 - by Jennifer Grant
The 8th grade group gave an insightful presentation on helpfulness, which is the word of the week (W.O.W) this week. They created a banner depicitng different ways of being helpful, and another group read journal entries.
We also had a guest speaker, Haley Burgess, who addressed setting goals (S. in B.E.S.T) and her achievements. She also discussed how she has been able to succeed in school and college with ADD. Eaton students were very intrigued and asked many interesting questions. All this month, and part of March, we will continue to discuss goal setting and its importance.

In today’s K-8 assembly, students shared ways to set and achieve goals. We also watched a video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-UjX6OKWF2c ) about Samantha Garvey. Samantha shared her thoughts on achieving goals and overcoming obstacles relating to a science competition. During the remainder of this quarter, we will be discussing the “S” (set goals and do something everyday to achieve them) in B.E.S.T.

Greetings!
Lockers finally arrived a few weeks ago, and Middle School Pod Class Students have enjoyed decorating and organizing their belongings in their new space!
Last Friday students participated in our bi-monthly assembly. Ms. Hall’s and Mrs. Stickel’s students presented “B” in B.E.S.T- one of our character education themes. The 8th graders joined the high school students and discussed the importance of carefully choosing friends and making wise decisions when using social network sites. We also discussed upcoming events and shared cake with our August and September birthday students. Assemblies are always well received and students continue to be respectful and participate appropriately.
Students Discuss “B” in B.E.S.T.
Thursday, September 15th, 2011 - by Jennifer Grant
The Resource Class enjoyed working on their B.E.S.T projects in class. Students displayed B (befriend only those that bring out the best in you) by making collages that depicted B. Their “works of art” are displayed on the 3rd floor bulletin board.
In assembly last Friday this group also presented words that described important attributes of a friend. These words included kind, forgiving, encouraging, unselfish, helpful and funny. The rest of K-8 had the opportunity to discuss and reflect. Students were left with this important question, “Would you want to be your own friend?” We will continue to discuss B this entire quarter as part of our character education program.

“T” in B.E.S.T – Students put on play
Tuesday, March 29th, 2011 - by Jennifer Grant
During Friday’s assembly, the 6/7 and 4/5 classes presented “T” (treat others with the same level of respect in which you want to be treated) in B.E.S.T. Carri Beach wrote a phenomenal play that portrayed bullying issues, ways to cope, and ways to help. Students acted out the play and had a discussions session at the end. It was a great topic to discuss, and listening to students’ insights were enlightening.
