LEAP experienced tremendous growth this year. Enrollment increased from one to nine participants. A variety of work opportunities provided by the program enabled participants to create solid resumes and obtain strong references. Several of the team members obtained part-time jobs as a direct result of their LEAP training. In addition to their time at job sites, participants gained essential social and independent living skills. They were taught how to budget and save, while still leaving room for fun and “hanging out on weekends.” Lasting friendships were formed and nurtured throughout the semester. One of the social highlights was our team trivia outing, during which the LEAP participants defeated their parents handily.
LEAP expanded its available work sites this year, bringing the total to eight. Also, we welcomed two new staff members. Mr. Ryan Burdette, a former police officer holding a Master’s degree in psychology, provided guidance in the classroom and on the job sites. Mr. David Giacchino, a professional chef, instructed LEAP participants on shopping, meal planning, and cooking. Staff members modeled professionalism, compassion, and determination, which directly contributes to our participants’ sustained success. LEAP anticipates continued growth and will always strive for excellence.
