Here are the remarks Sophia shared at the Evening of Celebration:
I thought a lot about what I wanted to say in this speech as I’ve been thinking about graduation ever since elementary school. Do I thank all the people who have gotten me here? Do I give advice on everything I learned over the past four years? Do I make it serious? Funny? Heartfelt? I don’t really know because they’re all good options.
If I decided to do a speech about all the people that got me here it would be a very long speech as there are just too many people who have really made a difference in my life. If I had to pick just a few, the biggest people to do so would be all the amazing teachers I had here at Eaton and all my amazing friends that have become family to me. I can’t thank these people enough for all they have done in my life.
If I decided to do a speech about all the things I’ve learned over the past four years it too would be a long speech because I’ve learned a lot in becoming the young adult I am today. However one of the best things I’ve learned is to live every day to the fullest doing what makes you happy. Not what makes your parents, friends, strangers, or anyone else in your life happy but what makes you happy.
If I was serious I’d tell you how powerful your mind is so use it wisely because it can make your life the best anyone’s ever lived or completely ruin it. You have the power to change your life just by changing how you think. Use it wisely.
If I were funny I’d say something like, well I actually don’t know what I’d say as I’m not very good at that one.
If I were heartfelt I’d tell you all the sweet and wonderful things the people in my life have done for me. Like my teachers being understanding the few times I couldn’t get my homework done. Or my friends supporting me every step of the way. Or maybe even about all the wonderful opportunities I’ve been given over the past four years.
Good luck to all the students here who still have school ahead of them and congratulations to all my fellow seniors.
