Ms. Hrabosky’s Ninth English students wrapped up the novel unit The Giver by presenting travel brochures and having a black and white party. Students created a travel brochure explaining why Elsewhere was better than Jonas’ community, demonstrated knowledge of Jonas’ community as well as compared it to an imagined or real community. Brochure material included discussing the community’s environment, education, economy, landform, climate, recreation, family, and government. The students had fun creating and presenting their brochures to the class. Since the people in Jonas’s community could not see in color, Ms. Hrabosky ended the unit by having “The Giver” Black and White party, where we pretended the class lived in Jonas’ community and that they could see only in black and white. Students brought a variety of black and white treats to share with the class, and some even decided to dress the part by wearing black and white clothing.
